Dean Li Publishes Second Book

Shaping the Future of Engineering with Bio-Inspired Applications

The book explores the synergy between microbiology and engineering, focusing on MICP and its applications in material improvement and environmental remediation.

Highlighting the immersion method, the book elucidates MICP’s ability to enhance mechanical properties uniformly throughout treated materials, offering a sustainable alternative for various engineering challenges.

Emphasizing its applications in civil engineering and environmental management, the book showcases MICP’s efficacy in ground improvement, crack repair, and soil stabilization, alongside its potential for mitigating environmental contamination.

The book provides a detailed examination of MICP-treated materials’ long-term durability and performance under various environmental conditions. The 300-page book is the first of its type with such comprehensive work in the MICP field.

Dr. Li previously published Hydraulics of Levee Overtopping in 2020. This book presents a cutting-edge approach to understanding overtopping hydraulics under negative free board of earthen levees and to the study of levee reinforcing methods.

Combining soil erosion tests, full-scale laboratory overtopping hydraulics tests, and numerical modeling for turbulent overtopping hydraulics, it provides an analysis that integrates the mechanical and hydraulic processes governing levee overtopping occurrences and engineering approaches to reinforce overtopped levees.

Dean Li has published The Immersion Method for Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation: Applications for Sustainability by CRC Press, which is now his second book.

Dr. Li is a Fellow of ASCE. He has published 3 books, 4 book chapters, and over 217 heavily cited journal papers. He has advised 19 doctoral students and 28 master’s degree students.
