Dr Kimberley Edelin Freeman's Appointed as Interim Senior Associate Dean at Howard University

Howard University announced that the Ujima Collective Principal Investigator Dr Kimberley Edelin Freeman’s was tapped for a new leadership role at Howard University. Starting January 1, 2026, Dr Freeman will serve as the Interim Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Education until June 30, 2026. This appointment highlights her outstanding contributions as a scholar, administrator, and mentor within the university community.



Dr Freeman’s Leadership Journey at Howard University


Dr Freeman’s journey at Howard University spans over two decades, marked by dedication and impactful leadership. She has served as Chair of the Department of Human Development and Psychoeducational Studies (HDPES) for eight years. During this time, she guided faculty development and fostered a supportive environment for student success.


In addition, Dr Freeman coordinated the Educational Psychology doctoral program for more than ten years. Her leadership helped the program grow in size and reputation, attracting talented students and faculty alike. Her ability to balance administrative duties with academic excellence has made her a respected figure on campus.


Research Excellence and Impact


Beyond administration, Dr Freeman is a nationally respected scholar. She directs the Freeman Research Lab, which manages several research and education projects. Her work has secured over $5 million in funding from prestigious agencies such as the National Science Foundation and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.


Her research focuses on key areas including:


  • Academic development and motivation of African American students

  • STEM education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)

  • Building research capacity at HBCUs


These efforts contribute to improving educational outcomes and expanding opportunities for underrepresented students in STEM fields.
